My heart tells you that...

Here I'm...in my deeper feeling of being an kicked-ass.

no no..not like that,,,not what  exist in your mental image.
well, let's see what's wrong with me.

I start the story from ...him. Yes...a handsome guy with his pointed nose.
Just call him Hayden. I met him in front of Salsa ballroom and I thought 'hey..this could be something'
It took my breath away.  Okay. Normally, I would fall in love with him. But I had rotten luck.
I wouldn't believe it. I  didn't want to feel this.

However, as time goes by...
He made me so special. He told me that I was a kinda exciting puppy  (I can't find another better word to say so) that made him so excited  to live his life.

Pygmalion...What?

Eliza Doolittle is a flower girl. She is not a rich woman and she speaks a bit rudely. One night, she meets Henry Higgins accidentally. This meeting happens when Eliza mistakes Henry Higgins for a policeman and then Higgins protests her innocence on this. Higgins is a linguist. He is with his friend, named Pickering, when the accidentally meeting happens. Higgins, then, says to Pickering that he can make Eliza looks like a duchess only in six months. On the next day, Higgins and Pickering are in Higgins’ laboratory to teach Eliza delivering speech. Pickering, then, bets Higgins that he cannot turn Eliza into a duchess, and Higgins takes the bet. Higgins teaches her by insisting the fluency based on the script. So, Eliza is just like imitating what Higgins says; she does drilling of some phrases.
As time goes by, Higgins asks his mother for help to turn Eliza into duchess by letting her interact with other people in the party that will be held by Mrs. Higgins on that day. The mother objects this, but then Eliza appears. She greets everyone in that room. Her speech is quite fluent; her fluency is flawless but the grammar is terrible. So, everyone in the room gets confused on what Eliza says. However, it is a bit amusing for the attendance. Avoiding worse thing that might happen, Higgins gives Eliza signal to leave that room. After the party is over, Higgins’ mother warns her son and Colonel Pickering about the possible consequence of their experiment to turn Eliza become likely duchess.
Higgins teaches Eliza again and again until she feels depressed. He teaches how to greet the ambassador, the queen, and so on. On the other opportunity, Higgins asks Eliza to attend a great party in which the duchess and other high class people gather. Eliza greets people politely, like a princess. She speaks tenderly so that The Queen gets amazed on her. Higgins seems to win the bet. After getting home, Eliza looks not good. When Higgins will go to bed, Eliza throws him his slippers. She is upset because of her life now. Then, they argue. Higgins gets angry and slaps Eliza. In the next day, Higgins wakes up and gets surprised because Eliza has gone. He tries to find her. He goes to his mother’s house and tells her what happens. After talking for a long time, Eliza appears. She goes down and says that she decides her own future. She says that she might marry Freddy or becomes phonetics teacher. Eliza, then, says goodbye for what she say in the last time. However, Higgins is sure that she will be back to him.
The episode that I like most is when Eliza comes to the party which is held by Mrs. Higgins. There, she speaks fluently but poorly in meaning. She just says what she has learnt by memorizing the phrases, the way she pronounces, and the way she talks. I like this part because I can find the effect of language learning which focused on fluency is not effective. Eliza can speak fluently but actually what she says does not respond the question or the previous statement given by others. For example, when Mrs. Higgins asks whether it will rain, Eliza responds by saying what she has memorized before, “The rain in Spain, they say, stays mainly in the plains.” Moreover, when Freddy asks her, “…would you be walking across the park?”, Eliza responds him by saying, “Walk? Not bloody likely. I’m going in a taxi.” It’s amusing for me because the response is not appropriate. That’s why I like this part.
The message in general that I learn from the film/ story is that insisting someone to be good in pronunciation need hard work. It cannot be instant since learning language for adults is different with children. Adults learn the language but children acquire the language. In this film, actually, I see that Eliza is a flower woman who will be turned into duchess. It means that Professor Higgins has to work hard in teaching her to speak as well as duchess, especially the accent. Here, Professor Higgins teaches Eliza by doing some drills. Eliza tries to speak as well as Higgins does. Drilling is quite effective to practice pronunciation with the target accent of speech, but it does not mean that it is effective to practice the accuracy of speaking. Moreover, Eliza tends to memorize what she has learnt. Consequently, she also tends to speak what she memorizes even though it is not appropriate to respond the other person’s speech. Furthermore, Eliza just thinks about her achievement; That is can speak as fluent as duchess, as Higgins wants to insist. She does not think about what she actually learns and conveys.
In brief, to turn someone into the other style of speaking is not easy and instant. It needs a lot of effort and time, and it is not enough to teach by asking her/his to memorize the phrases, the pronunciation and accent, or the way of delivering speech. Perhaps it will be helpful for the fluency, but not for the accuracy or meaning. It is like what Eliza does, she speaks fluently but meaningless. For example, when she says, ”Done her in.”
The message that I learn from the film/ story after I learn some theories on SLA is that adults will be more difficult to have good pronunciation and accent. It happens because adults have passed the critical period. In the critical period, children usually acquire language, especially the way they pronounce words and the accent, optimally. So, it is true if children who acquire language during the critical period will have better pronunciation and accent, especially in the second language. It is different with adults. Adults will find some trouble in learning the language so that they are getting hard to pronounce some words correctly in the target accent. For example, when Eliza tries to pronounce the word ‘Higgins’ with duchess accent, she gets difficulty in pronouncing the glide /h/.
Moreover, it is about the environment. What enables human beings to acquire first language, second language, or may be third language? Of course, it is the environment. The environment helps human to acquire language. As I see in the film, Professor Higgins takes Eliza to the party which s held by his mother and then to the party in which the duchess and other high level people gather. Professor Higgins does this because he wants Eliza to speak in the environment where people there speak with duke/ duchess accent. It will make Eliza tends to speak like a duchess. So, the environment helps the learner to speak as well as the other people in the environment do.

Selling Body for Money: Yes or No

“Prostitution stripped me of my life, my health, everything,” said a victim of prostitution who was interviewed by Coalition against Trafficking in Women (CATW). Prostitution is a behavior of having sex with someone to earn money. Legalizing prostitution refers to the permission for buying and selling women in prostitution; meaning to say that putting prostitution in a system of work which is legal like other general business, such as culinary business, handy-craft business, clothing business, and so on, are acceptable. However, legalizing prostitution makes dilemma because it is profitable for the government and some people who work in it but it also makes the women in this system suffer. There are four major reasons against legalization of prostitution; it increases street prostitution, it still makes the women in the system feel stigmatized, it keeps the women away from prosperity, and it threatens the women by Sexual Transmitted Diseases (STDs) spread.
Whoever stands for legalizing prostitution may assume that the legalization will stop street prostitution, a prostitution system in which the prostitutes spread around the street to wait the clients. It is said that there is no more street prostitution; if it is legalized, there would be more brothels to accommodate the prostitutes. So, the prostitutes must work there and they are also registered as the workers. In fact, legalization of prostitution in Nevada, Australia, Germany, and the Netherlands, according to Coalition Against Trafficking in Women, has been increasing street prostitution. It happens since the prostitutes do not want to be controlled by the brothel system. Consequently, the women prefer being street prostitutes to registering as sex-workers. This finding leads Germany and the Netherlands to reconsider the removal of legal prostitution because in fact it does not decrease street prostitution. So, the legalization does not decrease street prostitution but it instead increases the number of street prostitutes.
Some people believe that the legalization would monitor and control the prostitution as well as other business. As the effect, it may cause an assumption that prostitution is a well-organized job which is recognized by government and the law. Despite this, legalizing prostitution cannot lose the stigma of prostitution as a disrespectful job since many people assume that being a prostitute means being a person who works as a slave of men’s desire. Prostitutes are also assumed as women who have no dignity. If it is monitored and controlled, it tends to include the name of the job in the identity card. It would make the society are easy to recognize anyone whose job is a prostitute. Even though prostitution is legal, it does not guarantee the stigma of prostitution itself being gone. Furthermore, the society will lower or look down the women who work as prostitutes. Actually, nobody wants to be looked down and not accepted by the society because it hurts psychologically.
Adherents of legalizing prostitution claim that legal prostitution can be developed as a big business opportunity which can be taxed to support assessable income for government. Through the industry, prostitution can be organized. In this system, there must be the boss, the employees, and the clients. The women work for the sex industry or brothel and then the industry pays them. Besides, the industry must pay the tax to the government. Hence, all of them get the profit. Even though it can be a big business opportunity and income for government, it does not take the women in happy lives. From the angle of the women, not all women feel happy with their job as prostitutes. The prostitution is just close to exploit them rather than giving them prosperity. Many of them do not want to survive in this way. They do not choose their profession. Instead, some prostitutes are forced to have the profession because of the economic needs with no or few alternatives [Phil B on Philforhumanity.com]. In the other way to earn income, government can develop other industries, such as textile, telecommunication, and nature resources which do not victimize women to work in the sex-industry. It would be better than exploiting women to be sex-workers.
Some supporters also state that legalizing prostitution provides a good access to health check up and contraceptives (in this case: condoms) in order to prevent sexual transmitted diseases (STDs). In countries and states where prostitution is legal, the risk of STDs is lower than in the countries where prostitution is illegal because prostitutes have better access to doctors, medicines, and contraceptives that prevent and reduce STDs [Phil B on Philforhumanity.com]. However, working in the sex-industry is close to the spread of STDs. In one of CATW's studies, U.S. women in prostitution interviewed reported the following: 47% stated that men expected sex without a condom; 73% reported that men offered to pay more for sex without a condom; 45% of women said they were abused if they insisted that men use condoms [Prostitutionresearch.com]. Based on those phenomena, providing better access to health check up and contraceptives are not effective. It does not protect and guarantee the women from STDs’ attack as long as the clients do not care about it.
To sum up, legalization of prostitution gives more bad impact and less profit for the women in this system. The legalization will increase hidden prostitution since the women do not want the society know about their job. Legalizing prostitution is about taking the women in this system to people’s stigma in which they believe that prostitution is a disrespectful job; and the legalization cannot change this. Furthermore, it keeps them away from prosperity because there is women exploitation beyond the income from prostitution. To top it all off, it threatens the women by Sexual Transmitted Diseases (STDs) spread since legalizing prostitution does not guarantee the women to be avoided from the diseases. One more important thing is that most women suffer in prostitution psychologically and physically. People in general realize it but do not know how to help them out from this sex industry. The government should be aware of this problem. Making strong laws to ban prostitution and punish whoever takes a role in this industry can be one of the solutions. Furthermore, the government also should supply more job opportunities in order to avoid women to choose prostitution as the last choice. All in all, selling body for money should not be legalized since there are other wiser ways to earn money.

Working Mom, why not?

What comes in your mind when you hear the phrase “working mother”? Since the late 1990s, many women have left the traditional lifestyle and transformed to the modern one. Women increasingly enter workforce to have a job or career while in the traditional this is very uncommon. Nowadays, we live in the modern era in which many women work outside home, have career and children. This kind of women are called working mothers. Being a working mother is very common in this modern society even though some people still thinking that stay-at-home mother is better. Moreover, being a working mother has positive effects on her family life and herself, they are: increasing household income, being excellent role model for their children, guiding children to be more accustomed in social life, and making the children more independent.
The first reason why being a working mother is good is increasing household income. Some people believe that a woman can opt out her career or be a stay-at-home mother while still maintaining a very comfortable material standard of living.  However, not all women want to be like this. Women may be persuaded to work by strong prospects for engaging in prestigious, empowering, and interesting careers. These women are influenced not only by income but also by the kind of work they would expect to be doing to earn money (Gilbert, 2008). Women who work outside the home and get paid for her job can increase household income which is better rather than do nothing and produce nothing. Household income becomes an important aspect in family life since without any income a family will get into trouble. This income is used for household needs, such as buying food and clothes, paying electricity, paying education needs for the children, and so on. So, it is better to have more than less; It is about household income. By working, women can increase household income and support their family finance.
The second reason is that being working mother provides an excellent role model for children. While it is true that to be a good role model for children does not need to be a working mother, it can also be argued that being a working mother may provide excellent role model for the children. By working, mothers prepare their children to view work as meaningful thing that will be useful for their future. Mothers introduce their children with the value of work well if they are working mothers. Furthermore, when they reach their success and then tell the children about the successful result of the hard work, children may be motivated to be successful as their mother. Later on, the children may have high spirit to work hard as their mothers do. According to Working Mother Research Institute which is published in http://www.workingmother.com/bestcompanies/research, 85% of working women say that they have shown their children the good things when they show their success in work professionally.
The third reason is making children to be more accustomed in social life and active in extracurricular activities. According to the article by Suzanne Murray which is published in Cafemom.com, if a child has a working mother, people don't like that child as much since he is more annoying to others. However, that perspective is not relevant. Working mothers can anticipate the bad thing that might happen to their children, for example behaving badly, by educate them well. The main point that should be considered here is that mothers will not work 24 hours a day in a week; So, they still have time for their children to spend together and also to educate their children, even though only on the weekends. Moreover, while the mothers are working, the children can be taken in the daycare. There the children will socialize will other children. This condition will lead them to be more accustomed to social situations and to be more out-going and likely participate in extracurricular activities (Amanda DeJong, in her journal Working Mothers: Cognitive and Behavioral Effects on Children).
The last reason why being working mothers is good is making children more independent. It is true if people say that working mothers have less time with their children rather than stay-at-home mothers. As the effect, the children cannot be together with their mothers all day, but let us see the positive effect this condition. It is like the experience from Alex, 17, who has grown up with a mom who works full time. Here are his thoughts on the good and the bad of a working mom as well as why he thinks he’s a better young man because his mom works.
“Having a working mom makes you more independent. You have to learn to cope with other people because your mom is not always around. The worst thing about having a mom who works is not being able to see her all the time. She’s not there to talk to all the time. Sometimes, if she comes home stressed-out about work, we don’t have that much fun together. If my mom hadn’t worked, I’d probably be less independent and wouldn’t be able to cope with my problems as well. I’m more relaxed about going away to college because my mom travels a lot, so I’m used to being without her.” (Greenberg and Avigdor, 2009)
Working mothers provide opportunities to their children to be more independent. Moreover, when children have problem, for example in doing their task, they try to do it by themselves since their mothers are not there for help. This condition makes them be more independent to deal with their own problems.
In conclusion, by being a working mother, you increase household income to pay the household needs. You also become excellent role model for their children by showing your success in work professionally that can make your children being motivated to work later. Besides that, you guide children to be more accustomed in social life so that they will be more out-going and likely to participate in extracurricular activities. Moreover, you also make your children more independent since you let them face and solve their own problem. “My mom is my hero,” said Rocco Fiorentino, who is the son of working mother named Tina Fiorentino, co-founder and executive director of The Little Rock Foundation. Giving all the best for children may be one of the best ways to be their hero. So, why don’t you become a working mother?

Apa Itu Adil?

Setiap orang pasti selalu ingin keadilan.
